Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Understanding what causes persistent bad breath, and the right way to get to the bottom of it.
What is bad breath?
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common condition that affects people of all ages. It is generally caused by bacteria in the mouth breaking down food particles and producing odorous compounds. While the occasional bout of bad breath is normal, persistent halitosis is often a sign that an underlying dental issue needs attention.
There are many possible contributors to bad breath, including:
- Strong smelling foods and drinks, such as garlic, onion or coffee
- Smoking or vaping, which dries out the mouth and increases bacterial activity
- Poor oral hygiene, allowing plaque and food debris to build up on teeth and along the gum line
- Tooth decay or gum disease, both of which create an environment where odour causing bacteria thrive
- Dry mouth, whether from certain medications, dehydration or mouth breathing
- Underlying sinus, respiratory or digestive conditions that are unrelated to the teeth and gums
The right approach depends on the underlying cause, but a few simple habits can make a noticeable difference:
- Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes to remove trapped food and plaque
- Use a tongue scraper, as bacteria often collects on the surface of the tongue
- Stay hydrated throughout the day to keep saliva flow at a healthy level, since saliva naturally helps wash away bacteria
- Limit foods and habits known to contribute to bad breath, such as smoking
- See your dentist regularly so that decay, gum disease or other oral causes can be identified and treated early
At Central Dental Group, our team will assess your oral health to pinpoint the cause of your bad breath and recommend a treatment plan suited to your needs.
Persistent bad breath that does not improve with better oral hygiene may point to an underlying dental problem, such as gum disease or tooth decay, that is best assessed by a dentist rather than masked with mints or mouthwash. Left untreated, these conditions can progress and affect your broader oral health over time.
If your bad breath is ongoing, book an appointment with Central Dental Group so we can help get to the bottom of it.
