Broken Teeth

Cracks and chips you can see, and the silent damage you can’t.

About this condition

What are broken teeth?

Broken teeth refers to teeth that have chipped, cracked or fractured. Depending on the extent of the damage, a broken tooth may cause sharp sensitivity, mild discomfort, or in some cases no pain at all, which is why it pays to have it checked even if it does not hurt.

  • Biting down on something hard, such as ice, a popcorn kernel or a pen
  • A knock or impact during sport, a fall or a motor vehicle accident
  • Existing tooth decay weakening the structure of the tooth from within
  • Large old fillings that have weakened the remaining tooth structure
  • Chronic grinding or clenching, which places ongoing pressure on the teeth

Treatment depends on how much of the tooth is affected:

  • A minor chip can often be smoothed or repaired with composite bonding
  • A larger crack or fracture may need a crown to protect and strengthen the tooth
  • If the crack extends into the nerve, root canal treatment may be required before the tooth is restored
  • In cases where the tooth cannot be saved, extraction and tooth replacement options will be discussed with you

Our dentists at Central Dental Group will take an X-ray and assess the tooth thoroughly before recommending the most suitable option for you.

A broken tooth left untreated can allow bacteria to enter the inner layers of the tooth, increasing the risk of infection, pain and further breakage over time. The sharp edge of a chipped tooth can also irritate your tongue or cheek. Early assessment by Central Dental Group helps avoid more complex and costly treatment down the track.
