Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

A common, often unnoticed habit — and how to protect your smile from it.

About this condition

What is teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, refers to the clenching or grinding of teeth outside of normal chewing or speaking. It can happen during the day or at night while you sleep, and many people are unaware they are doing it.

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea
  • Certain medications
  • Misaligned teeth or an uneven bite
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol or high caffeine intake

Common approaches to managing bruxism include:

  • A custom made occlusal splint worn at night to protect your teeth from grinding forces
  • Addressing contributing factors, such as stress or sleep issues, where relevant
  • Restoring teeth that have already been worn or damaged by grinding

Central Dental Group can assess the extent of any wear and discuss a splint or other suitable management option.

Ongoing grinding can gradually wear down tooth enamel, crack teeth, and damage existing fillings or crowns. Many people also experience sore jaw muscles, headaches or earache as a result. Addressing bruxism early helps protect your teeth from further damage.
