Tooth Decay

Cavities catch up gradually — regular check ups keep them simple to fix.

About this condition

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or a cavity, occurs when the hard surface of the tooth is broken down, eventually forming a hole. It often develops gradually and may not cause symptoms until it has progressed.

  • Bacteria in plaque feeding on sugars from food and drink
  • The acid produced by this process gradually wearing away the tooth enamel
  • Poor oral hygiene allowing plaque to build up
  • Frequent snacking or sugary drinks throughout the day
  • Insufficient fluoride exposure

Treatment depends on how advanced the decay is:

  • Early decay can sometimes be managed with improved oral hygiene and fluoride
  • A filling is used to restore a tooth once a cavity has formed
  • A crown may be needed for more extensive decay
  • Root canal treatment may be required if decay has reached the nerve

Our dentists at Central Dental Group recommend regular check-ups to catch decay early, when treatment is generally simpler.

Untreated decay will continue to progress, eventually reaching the inner nerve of the tooth and causing pain or infection. At this stage, treatment such as root canal therapy or extraction may be needed. Regular dental visits make it easier to catch and treat decay before it reaches this point.
