Cosmetic Dentistry & Airway

Planning cosmetic treatment with function, comfort, and long-term health in mind.

Cosmetic Dentistry

A beautiful smile should also be a healthy one

Cosmetic dentistry at its best does more than change how your teeth look — it supports how your mouth functions. At Central Dental Group, we believe a great cosmetic result and long-term oral health shouldn’t be in conflict. That’s why, where clinically appropriate, we try to consider the broader picture before and during cosmetic treatment planning.

The appearance of your smile is closely connected to how your teeth, jaw, muscles, and airway function together. When we plan cosmetic treatment, we try to be mindful of how changes to your teeth may affect — or be affected by — a range of functional factors, including:

  • Bite function — how your upper and lower teeth meet and how that relationship may change with treatment
  • Jaw joints (TMJ) — any signs of strain, clicking, or dysfunction that could influence or be influenced by cosmetic changes
  • Facial balance — how tooth length, shape, and position contribute to the overall harmony of your face
  • Lip support — the role teeth and underlying structure play in supporting the lips at rest and in motion
  • Airway — jaw position, tongue posture, and dental arch shape can all interact with airway anatomy
  • Nasal versus mouth breathing — chronic mouth breathing can influence jaw development, tooth wear, and gum health over time
  • Tooth wear — active wear patterns may signal underlying functional issues that need to be addressed alongside cosmetic treatment
  • Sleep-related grinding — cosmetic restorations placed without managing active grinding are at risk of early damage or failure

Keeping these factors in mind during planning helps us create smiles that are comfortable and functional, not just beautiful. Where these concerns are present, we’ll raise them with you as part of the treatment conversation.

We don’t raise these considerations to complicate treatment or discourage patients from cosmetic dentistry. In many cases, none of these factors are clinically significant, and a straightforward cosmetic procedure is entirely appropriate. But where we do identify something worth discussing — an active wear pattern, jaw joint tenderness, or signs of mouth breathing — we’d rather bring it to your attention at the planning stage than discover it after treatment has begun.
