Digital Technology
How modern tools help us plan, communicate, and deliver more predictable cosmetic results.
Technology in the service of better outcomes
Good cosmetic dentistry has always depended on clinical skill, careful planning, and open communication between patient and dentist. Modern digital technology supports all three — helping us understand your starting point more clearly, plan treatment more precisely, and give you a more realistic picture of what your results might look like before treatment begins. At Central Dental Group, we use a range of digital tools across our Frankston and Elsternwick practices to support the cosmetic treatment planning process.
The technology we use
High-quality clinical photography is a foundation of our cosmetic assessment process. Detailed photos of your teeth, smile, and facial features give us an accurate visual record to work from, help us identify asymmetries or concerns that might be missed in a standard examination, and make it easier to communicate clearly about what we’re seeing and what we’re proposing. Photography also allows for before-and-after comparisons that are far more accurate than memory alone.
Intraoral scanners capture a precise three-dimensional model of your teeth without traditional impression trays or putty. The scan produces a highly accurate digital replica that can be used for treatment planning, for communicating with dental laboratories, and — in some cases — for generating a preview of proposed changes. For patients who find conventional impressions uncomfortable, scanning is a welcome alternative.
For cases that involve implant planning, jaw assessment, or more complex structural considerations, we have access to 3D cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging. This provides a detailed, three-dimensional view of the teeth, bone, and surrounding structures that isn’t available from standard X-rays. Like all imaging, CBCT is used selectively and only where the clinical benefit warrants it.
Digital planning tools allow us to map out proposed treatment before a single appointment begins. By working from accurate digital records — photos, scans, and models — we can sequence treatment more logically, anticipate potential challenges, and present a clearer plan to you from the outset. This reduces uncertainty during treatment and makes the overall process more predictable.
Achieving a natural-looking shade match is one of the most nuanced aspects of cosmetic dentistry. Digital shade analysis tools help us assess and document your tooth colour objectively, improving the accuracy of shade selection for restorations such as veneers, crowns, and composite bonding. The result is a better match to your surrounding teeth and a more natural-looking finish.
Where appropriate, we can create physical or digital mock-ups that give you a tangible preview of a proposed cosmetic outcome before any irreversible treatment begins. A physical mock-up places temporary material on your teeth in the proposed shape and size, so you can see and feel the change. A digital preview gives a visualisation based on your photos and planned treatment. Both tools are designed to support better-informed decisions and reduce the likelihood of surprises when treatment is complete.
This technology helps with communication and planning, and can give you a better sense of what your future smile might look like — before you commit to any treatment.
