Gentle Tooth Extractions
Careful, considered tooth removal that protects the bone and tissue you’ll need for the future.
When removing a tooth is the right decision
Not every tooth can be saved. When decay, infection, fracture, or advanced gum disease has compromised a tooth beyond what treatment can reasonably restore, extraction becomes the most practical and often the kindest option. Holding onto a tooth that cannot be predictably maintained can cause further damage to the surrounding bone, adjacent teeth, and gum tissue – making any future treatment more complex.
At Central Dental Group, extraction is never a first resort. When it does become necessary, our priority is to carry it out as gently and carefully as possible – minimising trauma to the surrounding structures and preserving as much bone and soft tissue as we can for whatever treatment follows.
The manner in which a tooth is extracted has a direct impact on what happens to the bone and gum tissue afterwards. Conventional extraction techniques, while effective, can accelerate bone resorption at the site. For patients who want or need an implant in the future, this loss of bone volume can complicate or delay treatment significantly.
Atraumatic extraction techniques are designed to minimise this. By carefully separating the tooth from its socket with minimal force and without disturbing the surrounding bone and gum, we preserve the natural contours of the jaw and soft tissue as much as possible.
Depending on your individual situation, your health, and your long-term treatment goals, we may recommend one or more of the following alongside or immediately following extraction:
- Atraumatic extraction techniques – a careful, instrument-guided approach to removing the tooth with minimal disruption to the surrounding bone and gum tissue.
- Socket preservation – graft material is placed into the empty socket immediately after extraction to maintain bone volume and shape during healing. This reduces the degree of bone resorption that would otherwise occur and makes future implant placement more straightforward.
- Bone grafting – in cases where additional bone volume is needed beyond socket preservation alone, grafting material can be placed to rebuild the site in preparation for an implant.
- CGF (Concentrated Growth Factor) regenerative therapy – a regenerative technique using a concentrate derived from your own blood, which is rich in growth factors that accelerate healing and support tissue regeneration. CGF is placed into the socket to promote faster, healthier recovery.
- Immediate implant placement – in selected cases where the bone at the extraction site is healthy and sufficient, an implant can be placed into the socket on the same day as extraction. This reduces the overall treatment timeline and can help preserve bone volume by maintaining stimulation at the site.
These measures can meaningfully improve the long-term success of future implant treatment, while maintaining the natural contours of your gums and jaw.
Tooth extractions at Central Dental Group are carried out under local anaesthetic, and we take care to ensure you are comfortable before we begin. If dental anxiety is something you experience, please let us know – we are happy to discuss options that can help make the appointment more manageable.
Following extraction, some swelling and mild discomfort over the first few days is a normal part of the healing process. Your dentist will provide clear aftercare instructions and let you know what signs to watch for. If you have any concerns during your recovery, our team is available to help.
If you have a tooth that’s causing concern, or if you’ve been told extraction may be necessary, book a consultation with Central Dental Group. Our teams at Frankston and Elsternwick will assess the situation honestly, explain your options, and – if extraction is the right path – plan it in a way that gives you the best foundation for whatever comes next.
