Root Canal Treatment

The words “root canal” have an unfair reputation.

General & Preventive Dentistry

Save your natural tooth, gently

Saving your natural tooth is often the best option when the nerve inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed. Root canal treatment removes the infection while preserving your natural tooth, helping restore comfort, function, and your smile.

At Central Dental Group, we use modern techniques and a gentle approach to make treatment as comfortable as possible while focusing on preserving your natural teeth whenever we can.

Although root canal treatment has an unfair reputation, modern techniques have made it more comfortable than many people expect. Our dentists at both Frankston and Elsternwick use advanced technology and a gentle approach to help you feel at ease throughout treatment while preserving your natural tooth wherever possible.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, may be recommended when decay or trauma has reached the soft inner tissue of a tooth, known as the pulp. This tissue contains the nerves and blood supply of the tooth, and once it becomes infected or inflamed, it can lead to persistent pain, sensitivity, or swelling if left untreated. Rather than removing the tooth altogether, root canal treatment allows many patients to retain their natural tooth structure.

  • Removal of the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth
  • Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the inner canal to remove bacteria
  • Filling of the cleaned space with a biocompatible, rubber-like material called gutta-percha
  • Sealing of the tooth with an adhesive, tooth-coloured filling
  • A dental crown may be recommended afterwards to provide extra strength and protection, particularly for back teeth that absorb more chewing force

Mild sensitivity in the days following treatment is common and generally settles on its own. Your dentist will talk you through appropriate aftercare and let you know whether a crown is recommended to protect the tooth long term.

If you have been told you need a root canal, or you are experiencing ongoing tooth pain, we encourage you to book an appointment so we can assess your tooth and discuss your options.
