The right tools, used thoughtfully

At Central Dental Group, the technology we use isn’t there to impress — it’s there because it genuinely improves what we’re able to do for our patients. The right equipment helps us see problems earlier, plan treatment more precisely, and deliver care that’s more comfortable and more predictable. Across our Frankston and Elsternwick practices, we’ve invested in equipment that raises the standard of every appointment, whether you’re coming in for a routine check-up or something more involved.

Our practices use digital X-ray technology as standard. Compared to traditional film X-rays, digital X-rays emit significantly lower levels of radiation while producing clearer, more detailed images that can be reviewed immediately. Your dentist can zoom in, adjust contrast, and share the images with you on screen so you can see exactly what they’re looking at. There’s no waiting, no chemicals, and no uncertainty about image quality.

For cases that require a more detailed picture — such as dental implant planning, complex extractions, or assessment of jaw structure — we have access to 3D cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging. Unlike a standard X-ray, CBCT captures a three-dimensional view of the teeth, bone, nerves, and surrounding tissue in a single scan. This level of detail allows for more accurate treatment planning and reduces the likelihood of surprises during procedures. CBCT is used selectively, only when the clinical benefit warrants it.

Both practices are also equipped with in-house OPG machines, which capture a full panoramic view of the upper and lower jaws. Having this on-site means you won’t need to travel to an external imaging centre for referrals.

We use digital intraoral scanners to capture precise, three-dimensional impressions of your teeth without the need for traditional impression trays and putty. For patients who find conventional impressions uncomfortable or anxiety-inducing, this is a significant improvement. The scanner moves gently around the mouth, building a highly accurate digital model in real time. These scans can be used for crown and bridge work, clear aligner treatment, and a range of other restorations, producing results that are consistently precise and far less time-consuming.

High-quality intraoral and extraoral photography is a standard part of how we document and monitor your dental health over time. Clinical photos taken at your visits give us a detailed visual record that we can compare at future appointments, making it easier to track changes, identify emerging concerns, and communicate findings clearly. Seeing your own mouth on screen during a consultation also helps you understand what your dentist is describing, which leads to better-informed decisions about your care.

Root canal treatment has a reputation that no longer matches the reality. Rotary endodontic instruments, which use a motorised, flexible nickel-titanium system, have transformed what was once a lengthy and uncomfortable procedure into something far more efficient and predictable. These instruments allow our dentists to navigate the canals of a tooth more precisely, reducing treatment time and improving outcomes. Combined with our focus on patient comfort, most patients find root canal treatment with rotary technology far more straightforward than they expected.

Ultrasonic scalers use high-frequency vibrations to break down and remove tartar and calculus build-up from the tooth surface and below the gum line. They are particularly effective for treating gum disease and maintaining periodontal health, as they can reach areas that manual instruments cannot access as easily. The combination of vibration and water irrigation also disrupts bacterial colonies, supporting a more thorough clean. Ultrasonic instrumentation is routinely used as part of our scaling and cleaning procedures at both practices.

Our practices use Biofilm Airflow technology — an air polishing system that combines a controlled stream of fine powder and warm water to remove biofilm, staining, and soft deposits from the tooth surface, including between teeth and below the gum line. It’s a gentler alternative to traditional polishing for many patients, and it reaches areas that conventional instruments can miss. The result is a noticeably cleaner, smoother finish that patients often comment on after their appointment.

These technologies improve diagnosis, patient comfort, and treatment accuracy — and together, they allow us to deliver a higher standard of care at every appointment.
