A calm, gentle approach, every step of the way

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to come through, usually during the late teens or early twenties. For many people, this can be an uncomfortable process. At Central Dental Group, our dentists at Frankston and Elsternwick take a calm, gentle approach to wisdom teeth extractions, helping to ease any anxiety and support a smooth, comfortable experience.

Not always. Wisdom teeth don’t automatically need to come out, and we don’t treat extraction as a routine step. Instead, we take the time to carefully assess each patient’s situation before making any recommendation.

When we evaluate your wisdom teeth, we look at:

  • Available space in the jaw
  • The position and angle of the teeth
  • Risk of future infection
  • The health of the surrounding gum tissue
  • The condition of adjacent teeth
  • Any current symptoms you’re experiencing

In many cases, wisdom teeth can simply be monitored over time with no intervention needed. In others, early removal may be the better course, particularly where there’s a clear risk of problems developing down the track. Our recommendations are always based on your individual circumstances, not a one size fits all approach to extraction.

  • Pain or tenderness at the back of the jaw
  • Swelling or inflammation around the gum
  • Difficulty fully opening your mouth
  • Crowding or pressure affecting nearby teeth
  • Recurring infection in the area around an emerging wisdom tooth

Before any extraction, your dentist will assess your wisdom teeth using diagnostic imaging to understand their position and how best to approach the procedure. Both our Frankston and Elsternwick practices use modern technology, including digital X-rays and OPG scanning, to support accurate diagnosis and planning. Depending on the complexity of your case, your dentist will talk you through what to expect, including the procedure itself and the aftercare needed to support healing.

Following your dentist’s aftercare advice plays an important role in healing well and reducing the risk of complications. Mild discomfort and swelling in the days following extraction are common and generally settle with appropriate care. Your dentist will provide guidance tailored to your individual recovery and let you know what to watch out for during the healing process.

If you’re experiencing discomfort from your wisdom teeth or have been advised that extraction may be needed, book a consultation with Central Dental Group today.
